Winter hiking, how to equip yourself well?

Winter hiking, how to equip yourself properly from head to toe?

"You already know: having good boots is the guarantee of making the most of your hike. In winter, it's even more true! Eric Favre, our footwear product manager, reveals his advice for hiking in all weathers. Grip and support remain essential criteria to which are added thermal insulation and impermeability.

1/ The grip of your boots:

For grip, the expectations are different in winter and summer. In winter, snow and ice increase the risk of slipping. So you’ll need well-designed treads.

Quechua has developed specific technology for this purpose: SnowContact. The components of this sole as well as its designs have been optimised to ensure excellent grip and maximum traction, whatever the type of terrain you’re moving across. On snow in particular, these soles are more effective than a conventional sole.

During a winter hike, your extremities must be kept warm to avoid feelings of discomfort. Your feet can quickly get cold and make walking painful. So you need to choose warm boots.

Be sure to find out about the temperature limits for using your boots. We set these indicators through “perceived cold” tests in the laboratory and in the field.

2/ The waterproofness of your clothes:

Finally, of course, waterproofing is important to make sure your feet stay warm and dry! We carry out two types of test to check the impermeability of your boots. These are first immersed in water under air pressure to check the absence of air bubbles on their surface. The boots are also placed half-submerged on a mechanical arm simulating walking. Thanks to this test, we make sure that the inside of the boots stays dry, even when moving!

3/ The 3-layer rule:

Once you’ve found your boots, I advise covering yourself with 3 layers to ensure warmth and breathability.

In this way, you combine a first breathable, warm layer directly on the skin, a second insulating layer in the form of a fleece or down jacket, and a third layer that protects against the weather: rain or wind.

Now you’re ready to enjoy the beauty of the snowy landscapes!"
