Why reconnect with nature?

You may be looking for a concrete interest to (re)connect with your natural environment. If so, we understand how you feel: in many people’s daily lives, nature can seem really distant (or secondary). And yet, we still survive! But that's the problem, we survive, but are we really living? Connecting with nature is a way to slow down, observe and appreciate the simple things around us. In other words, it's a way to feel alive! So, here are 6 reasons to take time out as often as possible, whatever your age.

1. Give yourself a physical and mental break by focusing on the present moment, without mental overload or constant notifications.
2. Reconnect with your feelings and sensations for greater calm and harmony.
3. Take time to breathe, soothe your mind and reduce stress and anxiety.
4. Reduce your daily sedentary lifestyle and its harmful effects on health through physical activity in the great outdoors.
5. Stimulate your imagination and improve your concentration.
6. Become more aware of the living world and the species that surround us, and increase your desire to take care of them by developing your ecological awareness. 🌿

Does nature reduce stress?

As mentioned in the introduction, spending time in nature can directly affect your stress levels. But what do we mean by stress exactly? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it’s "a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation." It is, in fact, a rational strategy of the body in the face of a potential threat or danger. But, on the other hand, we could do without the unpleasantness it brings: irritability, worry, sleep and concentration disorders, excessive sweating, raised heart rate... Today, our lifestyles make it happen more often. Pressure at work or from the family, money or health worries, change or even digital overload: there are so many factors. Yet in the face of all this, nature represents calm and simplicity. When in contact with nature, we can quickly return to a feeling of relaxation and happiness. Moreover, 84% of French people believe it has a positive effect on their mental well-being.**

How to reconnect with nature?

With all the concrete, noise, visual and olfactory pollution, urban lifestyles seem far removed from nature. And yet, it’s everywhere: with parks, rivers, trees, flowers, birds, or simply by looking up to the sky. Whether you live in the city, the countryside, by the sea or in the mountains, here are 11 ways to reconnect with nature and do yourself some good!

1. Hiking in the middle of the countryside: put on your hiking boots and explore the forest, mountain and countryside trails. You can use this opportunity to try Afghan walking, plan a plogging session or try sylvotherapy. Do you prefer a more intense sporting challenge? Discover trail running, nature running!

2. Picking mushrooms or plants: if the weather is good and depending on the time of year, leave the roads behind and go and pick something to cook up a pan of mushrooms or make a bouquet of wild plants. If you have walnut or chestnut trees near your home, that’s another great opportunity!

3. Do yoga outdoors: doing a yoga session in your garden, in the middle of a city park or on the beach increases the feeling of harmony between body, mind and your surroundings. You can also try hiking-yoga, a hybrid sport that lets you immerse yourself in nature and practise the Tree, Lotus or Sphinx poses.

4. Go on a photo expedition: you don't need to be a professional to take your smartphone or camera and try your hand at nature photography. Find pretty landscapes, small animals or insects to capture in pictures. Already started your trek? Here are our tips for taking home some great photos!

5. Open water swimming or sailing: if you like water, grab your swimsuit! By the sea, out on the ocean, on a lake or river, discover your inner fish or climb aboard a canoe or kayak. After checking if it's allowed, of course. 😉

6. Gardening: are you lucky enough to have your own garden or use of a shared garden? Gardening is known for its meditative impact. Getting your hands in the soil, seeing your work grow over the passing days, understanding the needs of plant species, setting some time aside for the living world... Relaxation and learning guaranteed!

7. Camping or bivouacking: spending a night outside, alone or with family, brings us back to basics. In a tent, you’re in the middle of nature while still being protected. At the end of the day, you can enjoy a superb sunset, depending on where you camp. If you're an early riser, sunrise is just as spectacular a sight to see. Not so comfortable on the ground? The roof tent option also works!

8. Stargazing: with binoculars or a telescope, if the sky is clear, it's a chance to see what's happening above our heads. Try to get as far away from light pollution as possible to enjoy the experience. Here are our tips for some great bird watching!

9. Play : nature is also the perfect playground. Mölkky, pétanque, Breton palets, kites, orienteering... You're spoiled for choice!

10. Discovering birds: do you know the Bullfinch, Jay or Linnet? There are about 600 species of birds in France, each one more beautiful and surprising than the last. For the curious, lots of websites and apps will help you spot birds, such as the Bearded Vulture.

11. Chill: settle down in a garden or park, on a beach, in the mountains, on a country path and do whatever makes you feel good. Meditate, read, draw, embroider, have a picnic, drink tea or coffee, or simply do some sunbathing or get some fresh air... The main thing is to choose a place where nature is all around and relax.

How to develop your connection with nature?

Are you short of availability, is routine catching up with you so that you’re gradually becoming more distant from nature? Is it time to continue developing your connection with your environment? Here are three tips to create a regular connection with nature, over the long term.

digital detox

Focus less on screens and more on nature

Does digital detox mean anything to you? It involves separating yourself, for a few hours or days, from your digital tools: smartphone, computer, tablet etc. Try it and you’ll quickly realise you have more free time. You might even get bored at times! But that's good news: being bored makes us more creative and develops our imagination. With this "new" free time, the possibilities for enjoying nature really increase. Practical!

spending time together again in nature

Spending time together again

Are you planning to meet up with friends or family at the end of the day, in your usual café? Why not suggest going for a walk in the forest instead? Or play a game in the park, for example? We’re often used to seeing our loved ones in an enclosed space, while the 11 ideas for nature activities mentioned above work just as well for many people. You just have to give it some thought!

Develop new habits

If what may seem difficult simply means thinking about maintaining your connection with nature, we suggest you help yourself by being a bit more organised. For example, you can set aside 15 minutes each day in your diary to garden, read by a tree or do a little outdoor yoga. This new habit will soon become automatic!

walk barefoot for improved well-being

Barefoot in the grass! 👀

Did you know that your feet have 200,000 nerve endings? This makes them really sensitive (we mean you, ticklish people 🙃). But since we spend most of our time with shoes on, they’re not stimulated enough. Walking barefoot helps meet this need, strengthening them, working on your balance and relaxing when done on natural ground! So, this summer, wait no longer: walk barefoot in the grass, on the sand, in the forest... Plus, it can bring back great childhood memories out in the open air !
