What are the dimensions of a carry-on travel backpack?
How do I know if I’ll be allowed to take my bag on the plane?
The first step when choosing a travel backpack to take on the plane is to find out the cabin baggage dimensions that are authorised by the airline you plan to fly with.
Here are some examples of measurements authorised by the best-known airlines. These figures correspond to the height, width and depth of the bag respectively:
- 55 × 35 × 25 cm (or 21.5 x 13.5 x 7.5 inches)
- 56 x 45 x 25 cm
- 55 x 40 x 23 cm
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) sets the official standard size for cabin baggage (suitcase or backpack) at 55 x 45 x 25 cm, including handles and wheels. However, not all airlines conform to these recommendations. The authorised weight is generally no more than 10 kg.
