How do you choose the material for your Decathlon tent according to the benefits it offers?

Polycotton, Fresh & Black, or some other anglicism used after the name of a Decathlon camping or trekking tent... It’s not easy to find your way around when choosing your tent. Yet all of these names offer key technologies to help facilitate your life and improve your experience on your camping or trekking trip.

What types of tent are available?

A quick aside before we get into the technical components: deciding on a specific tent design means taking into account many different criteria in addition to the material used for the canvas. From the number of people you need to accommodate to the structure of the tent, the decision quickly becomes a complex one. We offer you this little reminder which will guide you towards our specially-designed products. And if you prefer spending less time reading and more time camping, we’ve also prepared a general article for you on how to choose the best camping or trekking tent. Happy reading!

Fresh & Black and polycotton technology: explanations

Tents according to the number of people

Does choosing a tent according to the number of campers seem obvious to you? That's normal. But have you considered measuring your mattress according to your tent? It happens even to the best of us to find ourselves with mattresses overlapping by a few unfortunate centimetres, due to lack of space. So do you think you’ll be able to properly estimate the number of people per room, with measurements that vary from one brand to the next? What’s more, if you set off solo and sleep with your backpack, and in addition to this you’re not exactly a light traveller, you’ll need a two-person tent to ensure you have enough space... Basically, it’s better to come into the shop to visit our showrooms with our tents set up as if you were choosing your future home.

Tents according to the type of practice: camping as a family or trekking solo

Camping and trekking: two rooms, two different feels. And it’s entirely possible that you’ll like both (or not)! But you clearly have different needs if you’re setting off to camp with your three-year old niece, your in-laws spanning three generations and your Labrador compared to if you’re going to bivouac solo and independently in Peru for 10 days with 3 pairs of underwear. Advice for selecting the most suitable trekking tent for a bivouac: found right here. For family camping trips, once again, it’s best to come into the shop to see our Quechua tent designs and their interiors for yourself. And to save you time, and because not all of the shops always display their large tents due to lack of space (and not because they don’t want to...), we offer you an article on how to choose your family tent here.

Tents according to their structure: arches, 2 Seconds or inflatable

The era of the Canadian tent monopoly is long over. Now you’re spoilt for choice, Quechua "2 Seconds" pop-up tents that are pitched in a flash, to inflatable tents, real little castles that are easy to pitch and take down (or rather inflate and deflate) with an incomparable level of comfort. But each structure has its own advantages and drawbacks in terms of the time it takes to assemble and disassemble, ease of use as well as price. What’s more, certain structures such as Quechua 2 Seconds tents do not lend themselves to having a proper separate living room or bedroom, only a single room. On the other hand, arch and inflatable tents allow you to have a living room you can stand up in, bedrooms and an interior that can accommodate camping furniture. This is where you get to choose the most suitable inflatable tent.. And here’s where the "2 Seconds tent goes head to head with the classic tent".

"Fresh & Black" and "polycotton" materials

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty: the technical components. They give Decathlon tent canvasses certain benefits that allow you to enjoy your outdoor adventures even more. Whether you’re looking for a cool tent in summer, one that offers a quieter experience all year round, or for lying in late in the dark, we have the specific material that’ll win you over.

What’s a Fresh & Black tent?

Developed in our laboratories (because, yes, at Quechua, we do research and development ourselves at the foot of Mont-Blanc), the Quechua Fresh & Black materials fulfil two roles: keeping you cool and in darkness so you’re not woken early (or sometimes literally "fried, "sauna-style) by the summer sun. Fresh & Black technology has revolutionised camping to such an extent we’ve even patented it! Initially appreciated by festival-goers, we’ve rolled out this technology to many different tent models, from the 2 Seconds tent to the family tent. This is because everyone deserves to have a little control over the time they awaken in the morning, especially on holiday! Nothing magical, just very clever thinking: combining several layers of different materials in the double roof of our tents to mechanically reduce the light inside the tent. With less light, the temperature also rises more slowly. Think of it like a car sunshade, but better! All in all, 4 layers work together to keep you cool:

No.1 - A white layer that reflects heat

No.2 - A layer of titanium dioxide to block UV rays

No.3 - A black "carbon layer" to absorb residual heat

No.4 - An aluminium layer that insulates the interior of the tent and prevents previously-stored heat from moving on.

Canvas with Fresh & Black technology achieves this feat in coordination with ventilation and nets, to circulate air and optimise the "cool feel". The sun’s not going to be the one to decide your wake-up time!

What’s a polycotton tent?

Polycotton is literally a cloth combining polyester and cotton: "poly(ester)cotton". You’re well familiar with polyester: it has been the key component of tent fabrics for a long time. But polyester has its limits that cotton is pushing back on. This pairing provides a material that offers four benefits:

No.1 - Better UV-ray resistance and sun resistance in general

No.2 - Better breathability (the tent that breathes…)

No.3 - Longer lifespan

No.4 - Better insulation, especially sound

These benefits come with a price tag higher than polyester, but offer more comfort and above all greater longevity (see benefit No. 3). One condition: pampering your tent fabric and above all storing it when it is completely dry (humidity will be the main enemy of your polycotton tent). To help you to take care of it, we’ve written a comprehensive article on the care and repair of a polycotton tent. And if you want to take it to the next level and set up a 5-star camp, here’s an article with our tips for camping at the pinnacle of comfort.

How to prevent condensation?

Want to avoid waking up with the canvas of your bedroom covered in condensation? We have some tips for you. In fact, even though Fresh & Black technology and polycotton offer several benefits, they still don’t solve the inconvenience of condensation. While waiting to find a magic solution against humidity inside tents, read our article on how to avoid condensation in tents.

BONUS: Why are some of our trekking tents white?

Have you already seen white tents in the shop or on the decathlon website? White isn’t the first colour that comes to mind when thinking about a trekking tent. So why then have we decided to offer "colourless" tents? Well precisely because the material is made from 95% undyed yarn, favouring an eco-friendly approach. This process isn’t actually a technical component, but it makes it possible to produce tents, and even trekking mattresses, with a reduced carbon impact. For more information on the "Minimal Editio - Undyed" ("minimum edition, undyed"), here’s where it’s at.

We hope that you have a better understanding of our materials and the benefits they offer. So, are you opting for a morning lie-in with Fresh & Black technology, or rather the tranquillity of a quiet living space and comfort with polycotton? Whichever option you go for, you can count on our team of designers, developers and product leads to create technologies that make your camping life easier. All you have to worry about is creating long-lasting memories!
